Pipeline studio 3.0

This release enhances both the functionality and workflow within PipelineStudio®. Major new functionality includes:

  • Undo/Redo
  • Copy/paste configuration data and results into non-PipelineStudio documents
  • Definition of pipe wall composition
  • Modeling valve closure as a user-defined function of CV and percent open
  • Non-rigid pipe definitions
  • Duty calculations
  • Additional library elements

Undo/Redo
Following the Windows application look and feel paradigm, PipelineStudio now allows users to roll-back changes made to their pipeline network configuration through the undo command and also to re-apply the rolled-back changes through the redo command. Both undo and redo are available on as toolbar buttons, edit menu items and also context menu items.

PipelineStudio supports multiple levels of undo and redo, however, unlike many Windows applications, you can undo beyond the last save point for the document. When a PipelineStudio document is saved prior to running a simulation, this is a particularly useful feature if changes made to the configuration prevent it from achieving the required results due to incorrect data input.

Enhancements to Valve Modeling
Being able to model different types of valves, such as ball valves or butterfly valves, is a highly desirable feature in a pipeline simulator. To enable modelling of many different types of valves in PipelineStudio Liquid, users can now create tables of valve CV values for specified valve percent open values – thus defining the valve CV curve. A table can then be assigned to any number of block valves within the configuration and the block valve will use the curve associated with it to calculate the CV from the current valve percent open.

This approach to modelling valves allows for almost infinite variation in the type of valves that can be modelled. Once a valve curve has been created, users can save it in the PipelineStudio Liquid element library for future use. We have provided some sample valve curves in the element library to help users get started with using this new feature.

PipelineStudio has very few restrictions on the valve curves and therefore many different valve types can be specified and used in a configuration. During a simulation the current CV is shown in the block valve output property view and table and can also trended.

Pipe Wall Composition
U sers can now enter the Youngs modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of a pipe. These coefficients are used by the simulator to calculate the pipe wall expansion due to the fluid pressure and temperature. This allows modelling of pipe wall expansion for pipes made of any material. The calculated diameter of the pipe is shown in as a pipe output property and is also provided in output reports, trends and as a pipe profile.
Along with the new Valve CV Curve functionality, the ability to define the pipe expansion coefficients enables better surge analysis in a liquid pipeline where the details of valve closure and pipe diameter variation due to excessive pressures can impact the results.

Other New Features
Some of the other new features in PipelineStudio 3.0 are:

  • Copy/Paste to non-PipelineStudio documents
  • Configurable pipe wall expansion coefficients
  • Automatic calculation of overall heat transfer coefficient
  • Calculation of duty in heaters and coolers
  • Peng-Robinson large acentric factor correction
  • Ideal gas equation of state
  • Constant friction factor and frictionless flow
  • New library elements
  • New trends
  • Enhanced network validation

PipelineStudio 3.0 is fully backward-compatible with previous versions of the product, enabling users to directly access all existing data files.
